My Dog Dislikes Water: How to Gently Change Their Mind?

Do you dream of sharing water activities with your dog, but he refuses to go in, backs away from puddles, or panics at the lake's edge? You're not alone.

Many dogs are not comfortable with water… and that’s perfectly normal. But with patience, respectful methods, and positive experiences, it is entirely possible to restore their confidence and even make them love water!

Why are some dogs afraid of water?

Not all dogs are natural swimmers. Several reasons can explain this apprehension:

  • A bad first experience

  • A lack of exposure to water during the first weeks of life

  • A sensory hypersensitivity (noises, sensations under their paws…)

  • A lack of self-confidence

  • A lack of control over their environment (the dog needs to feel that they can say “no”)

And sometimes, it’s simply a more cautious temperament, more reserved… that needs to be approached gently.

Never force a dog into the water!

We still too often see dogs pushed into the water “for their own good.” However, this creates trauma, reinforces fear, and seriously harms the trust relationship.

At 1 Vie 2 Chiens, we deeply believe that you can only help a dog overcome a fear by listening to them and respecting their emotions. This is the foundation of our work.

How to help a dog love water?

Here are some essential keys that I use in my water activities, such as cani-paddle, floating courses or swimming acclimatization:

1. Go at their own pace

Start on the shore, then explore the environment, observe reactions, and reward every curiosity.

2. Create positive associations

Play by the water, provide a stable floating mat, and never set them up for failure. Play, joy, and treats become our best allies.

3. Work on stable ground in the water

In the Sainte-Croix Lake, we are fortunate to have areas where the dog can stand. This greatly reassures and facilitates the approach.

4. Use suitable activities

Activities like floating courses, paddle introductions, or kayak desensitization allow the dog to experience water differently, in a fun and safe environment.

What if your dog ends up loving it?

I have seen dogs fearful, frozen at the thought of getting their paws wet, transform over the sessions into happy dog surfers!

It’s all about respect, patience, and adaptation. Water can become for your dog a playground, a place of trust and growth… as long as you invite them in with kindness.

Come experience it in the Verdon Gorges!

At 1 Vie 2 Chiens, I offer respectful water introductions in the stunning setting of the Verdon Gorges. Each dog is welcomed as they are, and supported to overcome their fears safely.
